Our recipe for this exhibit–curated by “High on the Hog” author Dr. Jessica B. Harris–combines the rich histories, cultures, and ingredients of African American food traditions and serves them up in a communal and intellectually nourishing interactive experience.
A shared meal unites the history of food with the real-time pleasure of gathering around an interactive tablescape where a visitors’ touch reveals the meal’s journey to the plate in a delightfully non-linear way.
Visitor's see hands deliver their meal, giving them the sense that they’ve pulled a seat up to a communal table. Napkins unfold to reveal ingredient maps while glasses empty to show images of key people in a meal’s history, creating a story that’s larger–and more nourishing–than the sum of its flavors.
A monumental quilt by the Harlem Quilters Guild anchors the exhibit. Inspired by its bold colors and eclectic collaging, we give visitors the option to snack on bite-sized information or get their fill from a deeper dive. Like cooking a meal, the experience lovingly and beautifully combines disparate elements to elevate the whole.
