Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex

The exhilaration of a successful deep space mission. The dedication and smarts it takes to launch. The amazing fact that humans can accomplish such visionary things. Our two interactives at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center put visitors in command of an experience that delivers the rush of it all.

The Robotic Space Explorers Wall

In this exhibit we bring the ingenuity, uniqueness, and hidden delights of satellites down to earth. Bespoke musical scoring, full-body gestural interaction, and the surprise of hidden easter eggs create a playful, multisensory experience that inspires visitors who knew nothing about satellites to leave with a favorite.

As visitors approach the 30’ x 9’ wall, their gestures appear in star-filled silhouettes that highlight each planet, spacecraft, and asteroid they pass. Touchscreen monitors display the unique history and mission of each satellite. Visitors can launch any satellite from these kiosks onto the wall and watch its trajectory unlock more mission facts and trigger unexpected animations. It’s a total mind-body experience that emphasizes discovery and resists screen fatigue.

RL10 Engine

This interactive game gives visitors the chance to bring an actual, space-flown rocket engine to life by combusting hydrogen and oxygen at exactly the right moment to achieve lift-off. We didn’t program the experience for an easy win, instead the effort to find the right balance of elements reflects the precision necessary to execute this maneuver in space. The payoff for some concentrated work? A terrific sense of accomplishment and high-fives all around, just like mission control.
